Monday

Objectives: Get to know the teacher, become oriented to the space, understand policies and procedures, demonstrate prior knowledge of course topics, if applicable

Guiding Questions: Who am I? What are we learning here? How do we maintain a safe environment? How is each person’s safety the responsibility of everyone in the workshop? What relevant experience do you have?

Activities:

Greet students, take attendance, place in seating chart (5-10 min)

Introduce course topics and purpose “Intro PPT” (15 min)

Review classroom rules and procedures, (5-10 min)

IH Expectations PPT (<5min)

Index Card Tower activity (10 min) Using 4 index cards ONLY (no tape) construct the tallest free-standing tower you can

Tuesday

Objectives: Comprehend concepts of measurement and scale, understand how to use/treat/read a tape measure, demonstrate ability to measure physical objects with accuracy

Guiding Questions: What does it mean to work in scale? How does a tape measure work? Why is precision important? Why is the tape measure considered a tool? How does the need for precision vary across projects and industry?

Activities:

              Brief introduction to the importance of accurate measurement (5 min)

              Intro Tape Measure – demo use and handling (don’t over extend, don’t snap back, don’t crease)

Finding Length, Width, Height (or Depth) – measuring on straight lines at 90 degree angles

              Show fraction breakdown of an inch on white board, explain “loose hook” on tape (10 min)

Activities:  Continue Measurement Lab

Thursday

Objectives: understand different views in drafting (plan, elevation, section, perspective), demonstrate proficiency with reading a tape measure, examine relationship between scales, understand how to transfer measurements between scales, apply knowledge of measurement and scale to create an accurate scaled drawing

Guiding Questions: How can I represent different 2D views of a 3D object? How do I determine what scale to use? How do I use the scale ruler to both interpret and create scaled drawings?

Activities: VIEWS WORKSHEET

Introduce scale rulers (15 minutes)

Table Drafting Exercise: Fully measure class work table and then draft out in scale. Use 1” scale

Guiding Questions: How can I represent different materials in a floor plan? How do I determine what scale to use? How do I use the scale ruler to both interpret and create scaled drawings?

Activities:

Introduce scale rulers (15 minutes)

Table Drafting Assignment: Fully measure class work table and then draft out in scale. Include plan view, front elevation, and side elevation. Use 1” = 1'- 0" scale

Questions: What does a million look like? How small is an atom? How big is the galaxy? How can comparative scales help us comprehend things that otherwise escape us?

Begin work on Scale Visualization project: in small groups, make rough drafts of your visualization, get reviews from peers focusing on clarity of message and aesthetic appeal *peer review guiding questions on screen

Q1W4 Sept 3 - 6

Monday (NO school - Labor Day)

Tuesday

Objectives: Draft original designs for a theater building; verbally explain and defend artistic and technical choices; collaborate on developing a specific design; demonstrate proficiency with drafting in scale; understand and incorporate theater anatomy vocab terms

Questions: What is an ideal layout for various stage types? How do space constraints influence your design choices? Which parts of the theater are dependent on other structural features?

Activities: Review terms, examine examples of plan and section view draftings of theater buildings, begin table-team project: "Design Your Own Theater"

As a table-team, choose a stage type and a scale, then design and draft your theater.  Assume a big enough budget for whatever you want

Name the theater

Draft 2 views (plan and section) in scale

Label all parts (stage, house, lobby, booth, grand drape, legs, grid, greenroom, dressing rooms, backstage areas, apron, pit, wings, cyclorama, follow spots)

Wednesday

Q1W5 Sept 9 - 13

Monday

Objectives: examine individual progress in class, make remediation plans, review scale ruler use, analyze how sound propagates

Questions: What's my grade? Am I happy with it? Why is my score what it is? What common errors might I encounter while working with a scale ruler? What is sound? How does it move? How do we receive it?

Activities: return graded papers, review grading rubrics, review scale ruler quiz (and prep for retakes), INTRO sound design unit with guitar demo

Tuesday (FAST TEST DAY)

Activities: make-up work time, individual tutoring on scale ruler as needed, video

Wednesday

Objectives: remediate summative grade (scale ruler quiz retakes)

Activities: optional retake of Scale Ruler quiz, "Listening Log" handout

Objectives: consider the non-theatrical uses of sound and audio technology, examine the role of audio information in the natural world

Objectives: understand basic physical principles of sound, incorporate acoustics terminology into descriptions of designed sound

Questions: What is sound? How does it move? How are sound waves affected by different media?

Activities:  “Acoustics” ppt – review terminology. String and spoon demo by table.

Tuesday

Objectives: Understand terms associated with sound design, analyze soundscapes for information about setting and mood

Questions: What is sound design? How does sound communicate setting? What elements must a sound designer consider?

Activities: “Intro to Sound Design” powerpoint, ambient sound observation, alarm tone comparisons

Wednesday

Objectives: Understand terms associated with sound design, analyze soundscapes for information about setting and mood

Questions: How do different tones communicate different alarms? What is the relationship between pitch and emotion? Between sound texture and emotion?

Activities: Finish “Intro to Sound Design” ppt; Spotlight on Foley effects (view “Digital Theater+” video tutorials for creating common foley effects)

 

Thursday

Objectives: Understand terms associated with sound design, analyze soundscapes for information about setting and mood; compare and contrast tones to interpret meaning; practice active listening to become aware of the fainter sounds surrounding us all the time

Questions: How do different tones communicate different alarms? What is the relationship between pitch and emotion? Between sound texture and emotion?

Activities: Soundscape examples and discussion; Alarm Tones examples and discussion, Active Listening Lab worksheet

 

Friday: (9am ASSEMBLY)

Objectives: create a unique Sound Design, develop a Radio Play, brainstorm practical foley effects

Questions: What sounds are needed? How can they be created? How does can a theme be represented with both music and dialogue?

Activities: Introduce group project: “Radio Play”, choose teams and begin developing story.

Work in teams to develop and rehearse a Radio Play according the requirements specified in the rubric. Fill in “Info Sheet” on back of rubric.

Objectives: compare modern and historical production values, identify sound techniques used in an audio-only production, evaluate the efficacy of different musical selections and sound effects in advancing a story

Questions: Which non-voice sounds seem to be dominant in the Radio Play? How does music enhance the mood of the story? Are there auditory features that indicate the time period?

Activities: Listen to the classic radio play “Three Skeleton Key”

Friday

Objectives: review course content, enrich understanding of main course concepts, demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary terms

Activities: Kahoot Review Game (with prizes!) in preparation for next week’s tests


Q1W9 Oct 7 – 11 (reg release Wednesday) LAST WEEK OF QUARTER

Activities: Remediation, make-up work, and study day

Tuesday

Objectives: demonstrate knowledge of course terms and concepts

Activities: Tests on Sound Design terms and Theater Anatomy (stage types and terms)

Wednesday

Objectives: Understand all workshop safety rules and procedures, become familiar with terms and best practices for clamping and non-motorized cutting tools (back saw with miter box, coping saw, razor knife)

Questions: How do accidents happen? How can we reasonably prevent accidents? What is appropriate shop attire? How does the tool buddy system work? Who is responsible for safety? What are examples of what you should and should not do as a tool buddy? What are the clean up procedures and when do we do them?

Activities: Review Workshop safety procedures. Introduce and demonstrate tools. Clamps and vice; Hand saws (backsaw with miter box, coping saw), shop vac. Review clean-up procedures.
