Welcome to Technical Theater

Writer: Kevin KearneyKevin Kearney

Welcome to Technical Theatre!

This class is all about developing practical skills. Students will explore the various technical aspects of productions and apply that knowledge in a hands-on learning environment. My goal is to bridge the gap between a traditional woodshop class and applied science/STEM, while providing direct support to the various productions at Ivy Hawn. We will achieve this through the design, construction, and operation of technical elements (scenery, lighting, sound, properties) supporting both individual projects and public-facing performances.

In this class, students will:

-          Become proficient in the use of common tools

-          Learn effective building strategies and best practices

-          Develop a professional production vocabulary

-          Use different measurement scales with precision

-          Develop an understanding of modern lighting and sound equipment

-          Discover and apply the principles of design

-          Gain experience working with budgets

-          Demonstrate tool and workshop safety protocols

-          Build confidence in their creative problem solving skills

A Note on Safety

Safety is the top priority. All students must pass both written and practical exams before using any tools. Given the inherent dangers of working with tools, Tech Theater imposes a zero-tolerance policy for rule breaking and unsafe/unauthorized use of tools and equipment. We require 100% compliance with all safety rules in the workshop.

Any student willfully breaching a safety rule will be immediately removed from the workshop on the FIRST offense.

The following PPE is provided: safety goggles, earmuffs, and gloves.  Students are encouraged to bring in their own cloth mask for workshop days, in order to mitigate wood dust inhalation.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This Technical Theatre class is built around practical skills. As such, it includes learning about and using a variety of hand tools and power tools.

To maintain a safe environment, each student will be required to pass both a written and a practical exam on all power tools and non-powered cutting tools (ex: coping saw, hobby knife, etc) before being permitted to use them.

In addition to these in-class trainings, you will need to sign a waiver permitting your student to be eligible to receive the training and subsequently use the tools. The waiver, along with a detailed explanation of our safety rules and procedures, will be sent home in the coming weeks.

***There is a $10 shop fee required from each student to cover the cost of lumber and hardware.  If this fee presents a financial hardship, please contact Mr. Kearney to apply for a scholarship***

(cash or check, checks can be made out to Ivy Hawn)
